Kitchen Floor Plan with Large Pantry Project Review: A recent client came to me through my design consultation uneasy with her kitchen design service from a cabinet company, as she was remodeling her recently acquired home and had lots of concerns. Her questions were around paint and flooring stains, how to cohesively connect existing elements and her discomfort with her new kitchen floor plan. We walked and talked as I reviewed everything during her consultation from the kitchen island dimensions, pantry design and the flow around the kitchen. She was local so I was able to do an in person session, but I cover the same things in my virtual online design Zoom sessions. I asked questions about how her family of 6 lived, what was important to her and how their life might flow through this space on the daily. It became clear this was far more than just a kitchen remodel.
A kitchen layout can look good on paper and still not feel right.
She wanted to keep the existing kitchen footprint with the kitchen island dimensions staying the same, while gaining more counter space and improving the overall functionality of the kitchen floor plan.
Rather than looking at the kitchen in isolation, I immediately began looking at the spaces around it-the pantry, hallway, adjacent laundry and mudroom, as well as the exterior and a kitchen window that needed to be removed. By looking at how these spaces connected, I could see opportunities to improve the entire layout and flow to be highly functional for their family.
The result was a reworked kitchen floor plan with large pantry that had significantly more functional counter & storage space, deep drawers in the island, a large walk-in pantry with a beverage fridge, microwave, dedicated counter space, a bar area with wine cooler, along with a larger, more functional mudroom. I was able to increase useable storage while keeping the exact same footprint.
The Floor Plan Review

1) this window was taking up valuable cabinet real estate and needed to go (it also wasn’t ideal for where they wanted their BBQ to go on the deck)
2) this angled bench was awkard and allowed any kids’ stuff to be seen by everyone.
3) the pantry was very small and didn’t serve the clients needs for more counter space
4) the arched window above the sink was dating the space
5) this small and awkard arched counter area was completely non-functional
The Kitchen Design Service

1) I removed the window and added space for a beautiful furniture style cabinet with tons of storage.
2) by removing the bench and enclosing the mudroom area, the client can hang hooks for kids’ stuff
3) a walk-in pantry with counters, beverage, microwave and plenty of shelves
4) by adding a roman shade from the ceiling we softened the arched window placement and avoiding replacing it
5) by enclosing this and adding a pocket door, we not only gave her way more pantry storage, we also now have a nice spot for a gallery wall.
The pantry and arched wet bar areas now both highly functional and serve two different purposes. The bar cabinets are luxurious and pretty for entertaining and instead of using that beverage for the kids, we were able to add a new beverage fridge in the pantry.
