Bathroom Floor Plans

A real bathroom layout idea that solved the biggest problem: space. See how we transformed a laundry and powder room into a full bath with a walk-in shower for aging in place.

Aging in Place Bathroom Remodel: Laundry to Full Size Bathroom

Most bathroom layout ideas show you 10 pretty images — but no real solutions. In this post, we’ll walk you through a real project where we turned a cramped powder room (tucked under the stairs) and a laundry area into a smart, functional full bathroom with a walk-in shower for aging in place home modifications.

This wasn’t about swapping fixtures or choosing tile. It was about solving a layout puzzle — and giving our client a plan that the contractor could actually build.

The Problem:  Small Powder Bathroom with no Shower

This one was challenging for sure! The client wanted a full bathroom with a large walk-in shower that she could use to accommodate her aging mother. The laundry and powder were right off the main living room with no door at the entrance (separate door for powder and laundry). The challenges:

  • The large window that the client felt may be a problem to replace with her HOA.
  • The plumbing and drain wall wasn’t aligned for the laundry and powder.
  • The tight under stair space that needed to accommodate a stacking washer and dryer.
  • Creating privacy from the main hallway and living area.
  • Maintaining a reasonable budget

Aging in Place Shower – Walk-in

We started by mapping out clear zones to move the washer and dryer and create a larger bathroom for aging in place:

  • The walk-in shower fit perfectly with the window in tact and aligned with the main plumbing wall
  • Zero-entry to the shower is important for ease with moving around
  • A stackable washer/dryer was relocated under the stairs (right where the old powder bath was)
  • The toilet and vanity were repositioned to maximize flow and add storage
  • We added a hand spray to the shower with plenty of room for a walker or moveable chair
  • We floated the vanity to add extra space below

We accounted for:

  • Window placement
  • Door swing direction
  • Drain/water line alignment
  • Storage needs
  • Traffic flow to manage a walker if needed
